THE CHESTNUT TREE (tomorrow I am free)

“….from my favourite spot on the floor I look up at the blue sky and the bare chestnut tree on whose branches little raindrops shine, appearing like silver, and at the seagulls and other birds as they glide on the wind….as long as this exists, I thought, and I may live to see it, this sunshine, the cloudless sky, while this lasts I cannot be unhappy….” Anne Frank 23.2.44

I hope my little poem honours Anne.

*

This my chosen spot

I may lay me down

gaze can only upward be

filled afresh with hope

that grew upon my chestnut tree

tomorrow I am free

*

No clouds in my sky

nor shadow troub’ling me

gracefully glides the seagulls

silvering droplets

sparkling on my chestnut tree

tomorrow I am free

*

As long as this is so

and if my eyes may see

my heart cannot then be sad

for me the sun shines

through my glistening chestnut tree

tomorrow I am free.

  5. Hey, I’m the writer of tadpolediary and I would like to thank you so much for not only reading it and enjoying it but for adding it to your blogroll as a useful source. We put a lot of effort into the frogspawn and it makes me happy to know that you’ve found it interesting and useful :)

Also this poem is beautiful. It’s so deep and sad and yet finds hope in an extremely dark time. It’s been many years since I’ve read Anne Frank’s diary but I remember enough to know that this poem does her justice. You’re a lovely writer :)

  8. This is beautiful, a lovely tribute. I have also been very moved by Anne’s story. I agree with you that everyone has hopes and fears and feelings. I don’t think one can read her story and remain unchanged. I like your site! You have very interesting and eclectic things here. I shall be back to read more.

  12. Anne frank was unique and this poem is beautiful.

  13. Yes and yet what whammed me with her was that actually she was so selfish and self centred, and frivalous just like any thirteen year old in the world, she did certainly become more thoughtful as her ordeal went on. I loved her because I related to her at the time I read her diary.

  14. Thank you for this, even a no-brain like me am affected by her story
