It is not too much to say that J. Edgar Hoover was the singlemost powerful and influential political figure in America during the second half of the 20th century. He was feared by every president whom he served under.
The one group that would appear to have had the least to fear from him was the mafia, this was because he the arch file keeper was himself the subject of files held by the mob containing extensive and detailed information about his personal life. Hoovers alledged homosexuality and trans-genderism was used by organized crime to buy virtual immunity from investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Hoover must be seen as personally responsible for the ever growing in power and organization of the mafia in America enabling it to exert an ever growing power and influence not only in American domestic policy but foreign and global policy as well. Hoover’s enormous gambling sprees and junkets were funded by the Mafia.
The only question to be answered is HOW great was the hold they had on him and how early in his career were they able to exert it, the very nature of the beast itself would indicate that it was an ever growing and ever all gripping one.
I would argue that it is not unreasonable to suppose that they used their power not only for the purpose of the protection of their criminality from investigation, which in itself is scandalous enough, but that they used their power to aggressively pursue and promote the personal ambitions and aspirations of many of the most powerful and vicious criminals known to history.
Many of the still unanswered questions that surround the assassination of John F Kennedy [among others] can only be put into any meaningful context if J. Edgar Hoover can be seen as the central and sole figure in high goverment office with the authority to manouvre and manipulate the events that give rise to those questions.

Are you suggesting that Hoover misdirected the Kennedy asssination investigation in order to protect the mob? This is an interesting idea because as you pointed out, he was probably the only man with enough power and influence in Washington to do this. I am curious as to what other assasinations you think he might have covered for. MLK and Bobby Kennedy?
I respectfully disagree with your opening statement. My opinion is that Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the most influential political figure of th 20th century, although you are right about JEH’s power.
I had exactly F.D.R. in my mind when I said the 2nd half of last century, he died in ‘44. Imma saying a lot more than J.E. covering up, he was responsible for much of the security arrangements for Ks Dallas visit. I would say that he was a helpless stooge for the mob to the point where they could dictate to him. Some of those links are interesting. you could throw in Oswald with that.
My opinion is not that Hoover protected the mob from taking the blame for the Kennedy hit, but that, instead, Hoover COORDINATED it using a small group of mob, FBI, CIA and Army Intelligence operatives working directly under his supervision and control, with the implicit advance approval of both Richard Nixon and Lyndon Johnson, titular leaders of the two parties in the absence of Kennedy, and that the Bobby Kennedy hit was simply the tying up of a “loose string” to prevent him from assuming power and conducting a REAL investigation of who was actually involved in his brother’s death. Lee Harvey Oswald was lured into doing the dirty work and orchestrated by Hoover’s team. All the talk of additional shooters was simply a red herring to throw investigators off the trail. More work should have been done regarding the activities of each member of the team, tracking them back to Hoover, Nixon, and Johnson. A deathbead confession of one of the team members identified others on the team, but I know of no reputable reporter or investigator who has tracked those folks’ histories to show which federal agency provided them with their “walking around money.” It was a black-bag, black-budget deal from the get-go. We need to identify the money man from the political side (Nixon), the government side (Johnson and Hoover), or the mob side. Bobby Kennedy was closing in on Hoovers relationship with the mob, and that was one of the reasons why all the others agreed the deed needed to get done. By killing JFK and LBJ taking power, the Hoover / mob connection coverup would continue. Nixon was in on the deal because most of the guys were his from his VP / Cuba invasion days, and they did “political” work for him as well, and he could use political and mob money to finance the operation. He also personally hated JFK, and had a revenge motive. The pointing fingers at the Soviets and Cubans was also a diversionary tactic to draw attention away from the real doers.
There are some inside and outside government who KNOW what really happened, but are reluctant to go public because they fear the political repercussions, and loss of confidence in the integrity of our system of government.
Scary things happened in those days, akin to the trampling of our Constitution by our incumbent President. He is confident he will not be indicted by the World Court for his War Crimes, because he knows the other party will not allow that to happen. There is a vested interested in both parties to protect the other’s bad actors, lest their own “dirty hands” be exposed.
We agree on a lot Mark, but no EJ was a stooge put there from the beginning by the mob, or compromised very soon after, That generation of young blood politician and socialite were very naive in their youth, they get taken out for lunch, entertainments are provided, girls [or other treats] laid on. Photographs are taken and for ever more they are compromised and they get drawn deeper and deeper into the vice web.The Bay of Pigs was during Kennedy’s presidency, I can’t believe Nixon and LBJ worked together but EJH and LBJ certainly-and Nixon threatening LBJ with exposure forcing his ‘68 surprise decision not to run. It’s mucky stuff up there Mark in the higher echelons and not only in the U.S. and not only in government either. You have to accept that where there is money there is corruption.
During his term as Ike’s VP, Nixon had ties to organized gambling interests wanting Ike to invade Cuba — and Howard Hunt and others worked on a special team of CIA operatives directly for RMN trying to provoke a war with Cuba, assassinate Castro, etc.
Nixon and Hoover were both mob connected and co-conspirators in these Cuban and other ventures, culminating in the murder of a sitting president. They both hated Kennedy, as did LBJ. They both would have rather had LBJ in power than JFK, so that was the way to accomplish their end.
Follow the money trail. That still has not been done. See who paid for the operation, and who profited from it and whose interests were protected by it. Organized criminals might have controlled our government, but it was our political leaders who had Kennedy killed to serve interests of their own and of the mob. It is unfair to pin the tail on the mob only, when our leaders had dirty hands and controlled the whole operation.
Yes I know that Cuba had it’s origin with Ike and that probably came about from dealings with the mob going back to ww2, the mob had turned to narcotics since the end of prohibition that’s the money connection and Cuba was the mob’s supply–and laundry-So I wouldn’t quickly put Nixon into the frame at that point. But the mob already had it’s men in situ in government, certainly Nixon knew all about it and the macarthy circus was a huge red herring-And I would not trust the integrity of anyone who could make an appeal like “chequers” This goes layers on layers. It’s what the missile crisis was all about and Vietnam? The problem [as I read the history,and between the lines] came with Kennedy’s catholic conscience, he was the fly caught in the corruption web who wriggled, and we know what happens to flys who wriggle. LBJ was up to his neck and his new deal [probably the finest piece of social reconstruction since FDR's reflation] but it was another red herring. The lesson I learn out of it all and why I never despair is that God rules and overules in the affairs of men and brings about His purposes. What I am saying is that the political leaders were all mob controlled to one degree or another, it started with Ike and was strengthened tighter and tighter through JEH.
