Samuel Pepys [1633-1703]

Was a member of parliament and a naval administrator, he is of course famous for keeping a diary which cover the years 1659-69. He rose from moderate beginnings having been born in London’s famous Fleet st the son of a tailor. He attended St. Pauls school and went on to Cambrige university.

Samuel Pepyps began his career as a secretary to Edward Montagu who was an advisor to Oliver Cromwell during the protectorate, an 1655 he married 15 year old Elizabeth Marchant de Saint Michel the daughter of a Huguenot refugee.

On January 1st 1660 Pepys began his diary, it contains a full description of Charles 2nd coronation heralding the return of the monarchy to Britain, there are as well full accounts of such events as the plague and the great fire of London in 1665, the diary is famous for Pepys private observations and revelations of infidelity etc as well as vivid portraits of the era of such prominent persons as Christopher Wren and Sir Isaac Newton.

Pepys discontinued keeping his diary in 1669 because he feared he was losing his sight.
